昼休みのオフィス街を恐怖が襲った。東京・丸の内の三菱重工ビル１階正面玄関で突然、ドカーンという大音響とともに爆発が起き、白煙が噴き上がった。コンクリート片が飛び散り、路上には雨のようにガラス片が降り注いだ。８人が死亡、３８０人余りが重軽傷を負うという前例のない無差別テロだった。
翌１９７５年５月１９日、犯人グループ８人が警視庁に一斉逮捕された。「東アジア反日武装戦線」を名乗る犯人たちは、「狼（おおかみ）」「大地の牙」「さそり」の３グループに分かれ、摘発されるまで計１７件の犯行を重ねていた。連合赤軍以降、さらに先鋭化した過激グループだった。
後に検事総長になる故伊藤栄樹は、当時、東京地検の次席検事だった。別の事件の報告で最高検に行き、８階の食堂でそばを食べている時、爆破事件にぶつかった。「ドーンというにぶい爆発音がして、丸の内の“三菱村”のあたりに、見る見る煙が立ち込めるのを現認した」と、自著「検事総長の回想」に記している。伊藤は事件後、捜査の指揮を執っていく。
逮捕された８人のうち、１人は直後に自殺。残りの７人は起訴されたが、佐々木規夫被告は７５年８月、日本赤軍によるクアラルンプール事件で、さらに大道寺あや子と浴田（えきた）由紀子の両被告は７７年１０月のダッカ事件で、「超法規的措置」によって、人質と引き換えに釈放された。
残った４被告の裁判は、初公判から約１２年後の１９８７年３月、最高裁で決着した。大道寺将司、益永利明の両被告に死刑、あとの２人には、無期懲役と懲役８年が言い渡された。
超法規的措置によって釈放された浴田被告は、９５年３月、潜伏先のルーマニアで身柄を拘束された。日本に移送され、逮捕。２００４年、懲役２０年の判決が確定した。
佐々木と大道寺あや子の両被告は、海外に潜伏していると見られる。発生から３５年。事件はまだ終わっていない。（敦）
